Practising Law

Hi, I'm Jason

and for the past four years, I’ve helped hundreds of new and aspiring solicitors build foundations for successful and sustainable careers in law.

As a first-generation lawyer, I had no idea what to expect in a legal career. My parents migrated from China and worked in IT. I went to public schools, not fancy private schools. And I was pretty average at law school exams.

So to find any sort of edge – I put all my effort into getting work experience and figuring out what being a lawyer was like in practice.

Over the years, I’ve worked:

  • at a small suburban law firm;
  • at a community legal centre;
  • in-house at a charity;
  • as a paralegal through to associate at a national law firm;
  • on secondments to large corporate clients; and
  • now, as an associate at an international law firm.

There was a lot of trial and error (so, so much error…) – but I was also lucky enough to get great mentoring from a bunch of amazing lawyers.

To pay it forward, I’ve been preparing how-to guides and other practical resources for new lawyers. Ones that anybody can follow. Hopefully so you can avoid the mistakes I’ve made, and excel in your first few years.

Here’s how you can get a quick heads up on real-life lawyering:
